The EKOSUSAK2008 architecture workshop is thought as 1 week research incubator, where we will develop a collaboration between students, experts and critics from various artistic and scientific fields. Under the guidance of international and Croatian architects, young professionals and students from the architecture faculties of Zagreb, Ljubljana, Split, Europian country and Japan, will be working on the island of Susak. The island is at the same time the subject of the workshop, a paradigmatic case of isolated territory. The aim of the workshop is to develop a wide range of strategies for isolated territories. The final goal of the workshop is to develop a platform for questioning and defining a new strategies and models of sustainable development of (small) Adriatic islands1. The idea of spatial development based on ecological determinants is derived through territorial specificity of the island, as "isolated" territorial unit, and therefor extremely vulnerable ecosystem. Spatial, economic and social development without distortion of the ecological balance, through the simmetry of natural and artificial, will be the starting point when thinking about scenarios and development strategies of the island of Susak.
During the last century island of Susak lost a large number of its inhabitants. The number of Susak islanders living in emigration far exceeds the number living at the very island. After the WWII the island's population was at its peak with 1876 inhabitants, while Susak became a part of Croatia, which was in turn part of Yugoslavia at the time. A communist regime implemented nationalization and agricultural reform which altogether signed the island's death penalty. The factory for fish processing got closed down. During the 1960s mass emigration commenced. Due to political and economical reasons total of 1395 islanders left Susak. As a consequence of this massive population loss one can say the island started slowly disappearing.... The rest of islanders was doomed to manage solely on the island's own resources, since every island is an example of sustainable community.
Respecting these facts the sculpture workshop will focus at materials provided by the island itself: sand, pebbles, wood, reed, deposited matter, anything offered by the sea that can be used for making the sculptures. While doing so, the essential aim is not to make sculptures that would be permanently located at Bok Bay. On contrary, drawing a parallel to ephemerality in social and demographic picture of Susak, we shall create sculptures that will last only until the next new tide, bora wind, rain or any other circumstance that will lead to works' disintegration. The sea will again reclaim what it has washed ashore, the wind will sweep away the parts that belong to the forest, the rain will scatter the sand and the balance will be regained... On the other hand, some works will aspire to duality, and will be constructed in harder and more durable materials, to become a part of permanent island's layout and gradually merge into the surrounding, remaining "permanent inhabitant" of the island of Susak. The workshop invites authors belonging to the younger generation that have previous experiences with sculpture, installation, ambients, along with the authors who find conception of this workshop to be sufficiently intriguing to inspire a project that will be realized in collaboration with the workshop's leader and other participants.
The applications are received not later than 20 June 2008 and should be mailed at akorkut@inet.hr and vana.govic@mmsu.hr. Besides application, please enclose a short CV (English or Croatian) along with few photos of your previous works (JPEG or print). It is also advised to send a short description of the work you intend to create at Susak island, along with some sketches.
The workshop participants will focus at photographing inhabitants of the island. The photographs of Susakans will be shot in a form of portrait (posing and modelling i.e. in agreement with islanders), group portraits (family, friends), people portrayed indoors and outdoors (in the places they live across the island). Photographers will be concentrated at two elements simultaneously: the people portrayed and their surrounding. In this manner the workshop endeavours to yield organized photographing of Susak islanders in their own surrounding.
Photographs are meant to remain in the possession of portrayed islanders. As for the participants, the workshop means getting familiar with a kind of photographic portraits such as one recognized in photographic heritages of A. Sander (Menschen des 20. Jahrenhunderdts), W. Evans (American Photographs) or B. Cvjetanović (Građani).
Workshop applications (in either English or Croatian) with data (CV) and photo summary of previous works are to be mailed at: markoercegovic@inet.hr and vana.govic@mmsu.hr.
with the designation: SUSAK Photography Workshop.
The applications are received not later than 20 June 2008.
